About Me

Ian Black

Hi, I’m Ian — and I was born to create.

I’ve been building things for as long as I can remember. What started as a kid taking apart everything I could get my hands on turned into over 20 years of professional fabrication — from precision metal work in a production fabrication shop, to engineering theatrical set pieces and mechanical props that had to perform flawlessly night after night. My career started with a metal fabrication apprenticeship in the Chicago suburbs, took me through seven years of maintaining complex building systems, and then twelve years as the go-to fabricator at a professional theatre where I turned a wood-only shop into a full multi-material fabrication operation.

I think in materials. Give me a challenge — a dragon that needs to fly, a fireplace carved from foam that looks like real stone, a TARDIS that needs to appear on stage — and I’ll figure out how to build it. Metal, wood, fiberglass, foam, fabric, electronics — I pick the right tool and the right material for the job, every time.

When I’m not building for work, I’m building for fun. Custom costumes, parade floats, patriotic choppers, replicas of famous landmarks — if I can imagine it, I can make it real.
